When business gets uncertain, owners naturally focus on revenue, expenses, productivity and cash flow. But there is another side of the equation that can easily be overlooked: your people are feeling the uncertainty too.

Employees may be worried about job security, rising living costs, workload, compensation and what the future holds. At the same time, businesses are under pressure to accomplish more with fewer resources.

That combination can quietly affect employee engagement, productivity and retention.

According to BDC’s Monthly Economic Letter (April 2026), Canada's economic environment remains mixed, with slower growth and continued cost pressures. Labour-market conditions have also been volatile, making it increasingly important for employers to understand what is happening inside their organizations—not just outside them.

What can employers do?

Communicate more, not less.
You don't need to share confidential financial information, but employees should understand what is happening, what is expected of them and where the organization is headed.

Recognize contribution.
When salary increases or bonuses are difficult to accommodate, meaningful recognition becomes even more important. Employees want to know that their work matters.

Watch workload and burnout.
"Doing more with less" can work temporarily. It is not a sustainable people strategy.

Give managers the tools to lead.
Your managers are often the closest connection between leadership and employees. Equip them to have honest conversations, address performance issues and recognize when someone is struggling.
