Career Change, what to do
Career Change, what to do

Have you ever looked at your career and thought: “Is this really what I want to be doing for the next five, ten or fifteen years?”

If you have, you're not alone.

Career change isn't necessarily a sign that you've failed. It might be a sign that you've grown.

Grown because your priorities have changed. Your interests have changed. Your skills have developed. Or perhaps you've simply reached a point where you want your work to mean something different.

Statistics Canada reported in January 2026 that among core-aged Canadian employees planning to leave their jobs, career change or advancement was the most common reason, cited by 38.8%.

That's significant.

But here's where I think we need to change the conversation around career transitions.

A career change doesn't always mean starting over.

Your years of experience aren't a liability. They're assets.

The leadership skills you've developed. The relationships you've built. Your ability to solve problems. Your industry knowledge. Your communication skills. Your resilience. Your understanding of how organizations actually work. Those things travel with you and the skills that go with them tend to come in handy at the oddest moments.

As author and organizational psychologist Adam Grant writes:

“You don't have to find your calling. You have to find ways to cultivate your interests.”

That is an important distinction.

You don't necessarily need to discover one magical career that you've been destined to pursue since childhood. Some people do and others perhaps like yourself have a different pathway. So, it becomes this adventure where you get to :

Experiment. Learn. Reposition yourself.

You can take the experience you already have and apply it somewhere new.

And while career change can be exciting, it pays to be strategic.

Don't make your next career move simply because you're unhappy with your current one.

Instead, ask yourself:

What am I moving toward?

What kind of work energizes me?

What problems do I enjoy solving?

What am I exceptionally good at?

What have I learned that other organizations or industries could benefit from?

What does success look like for me now—not five years ago?

And perhaps the biggest question:

What would I do if I stopped assuming my career had to follow the path I originally planned?

Career reinvention is not about forcing yourself to follow a predetermined path that no longer fits. It is an opportunity to uncover untapped talents, recognize the skills you have already built, and explore work that feels more aligned with who you are becoming.

Your next chapter may not require another degree.

It may not require starting at the bottom.

And it certainly doesn't require throwing away everything you've accomplished.

It may simply require seeing your experience through a different lens.

Your career isn't a life sentence.

If you're considering a career change, leadership transition, consulting path or simply wondering what comes next, Neoterik HR & Coaching Solutions can help you take a strategic look at your experience, strengths and possibilities.
